Summer Heat and Your Vehicle's Paint

Black Porsche Cayenne with glossy paint finish after professional detailing in Chesterfield VA

Summer is here and it is HOT! We wanted to take a minute to talk about what the Virginia heat and sun do to your vehicle and how to protect it.

UV Damage Is Real

The number one enemy of your paint during the summer months is ultraviolet radiation. UV rays break down the clear coat over time, leading to oxidation, fading, and that chalky look you see on older vehicles that have spent years baking in the sun. Dark-colored vehicles show it faster, but every color is affected.

If your vehicle sits outside during the day, whether at work or in the driveway, it's absorbing hours of direct UV exposure. Even parking under trees comes with its own problems: sap, bird droppings, and pollen all become more corrosive in the heat and can etch into the clear coat if left sitting.

What You Can Do

The single best thing you can do for your paint going into summer is get a ceramic coating applied. A quality ceramic coating adds a sacrificial layer of UV-resistant protection that sits on top of your clear coat. It won't make your car bulletproof, but it dramatically slows down the damage from sun exposure and makes the surface much easier to clean and maintain.

If a full ceramic coating isn't in the budget right now, a professional-grade sealant applied after a good wash and decontamination will still give you several months of protection. The key is having something between the sun and your clear coat.

A few other simple habits that help:

  • Park in shade when you can, or use a windshield sun shade at minimum.
  • Wash bird droppings and tree sap off as soon as possible. In summer heat, these can etch paint in hours, not days.
  • Rinse your car regularly, even if you can't do a full wash. Getting the dust and debris off prevents it from grinding into the paint when you do wash.
  • Don't forget the interior. UV also fades dashboards, cracks leather, and degrades plastics. A good UV protectant on interior surfaces goes a long way.
